WOMEN’S CIVIC CLUB OF SCHWENKSVILLE CELEBRATES 95TH ANNIVERSARY

The year 1916 saw the birth of theWomen’s Civic Club of Schwenksville. Eliza Pennypacker, first president and daughter of the late Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker, and a small group of like-minded ladies started a civic club. June 15, 1916 was the official date and July 4th was the first fund raiser supper. Since a war was raging in Europe money was donated to the Red Cross and bandages were rolled, socks and scarves were knitted – all for the soldiers.
The primary focus of The Club was “Library.” The former Schwenksville School Library was the earliest library supported by the members. Then the Schwenksville Community Library, built in 1955, received volunteer workers, board members and needed financial support. Recently re-named the Perkiomen Valley Library and its Community Room continue to be the meeting place for the membership. The Civic Club has helped with renovations and refurbishing.
