PERKIOMEN VALLEY SUNS OF VIKINGS’ SOLAR-POWERED CARS SHINE BRIGHT AND WIN THREE TOP AWARDS AT 21ST ANNUAL PHILADELPHIA JUNIOR SPRINT RALLY

COLLEGEVILLE – Perkiomen Valley School District’s Suns of Vikings team brought home three of the top awards in the 21st Annual Philadelphia Junior Sprint Rally, which was held May 31 at the Franklin Institute.
Fifth-grade students from Skippack, South, and Evergreen Elementary schools; sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from Perkiomen Valley Middle School East and West; and Perkiomen Valley High School tenth-graders all competed in this years’ event. A total of 60 students created 30 solar-powered model cars. These engineers collaborated, designed, and built their cars, exhibiting creativity and innovation at every solar club meeting. Friendly competition and amazing achievements were the results.
Specific achievements and awards are listed below:
1. 2014 Open Division Trophy for Speed- Tenth-graders Anna Hansen and Becky Hane competed against Drexel University students to win this award. This is the second year in a row that they have received this award.
2. 3rd Place Trophy for Junior Solar Sprint Artistic Merit Honors- Skippack Elementary fifth-graders Courtney Keef, Meghan MacGregor and Ellie Brega
3.  2nd Place Trophy for Junior Solar Sprint Re-Use Merit Honors- Skippack Elementary fifth-grader Ella Brant and Middle School East eighth-grader Connor Brant
4.  Honorable Mentions-  Evergreen fifth-graders Griffin Kilgore and Drew Curci for Speed, Skippack fifth-graders Dominic Miceli and Christopher Regent for Technical Merit and semi-finals for Speed, and South fifth-graders McKenzie Patla and Victoria Anglace for Artistic Merit
