Stitch to Learn

Learn to Stitch at Pennypacker Mills

March 1, 2017 through Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Schwenksville, PA  – Pennypacker Mills announces “Stitch to Learn, Learn to
Stitch”, an exhibition of embroidery opening Wednesday, March 1, 2017 and continuing through
Wednesday, January 31, 2018. With more than fifty selected objects, this exhibit explores the
interrelationship between fine embroidery and the education of young girls. In the process of making a
sampler containing the alphabet, girls learned the alphabet while also learning embroidery techniques,
discipline, and design. As a teenager they would move on to more advanced decorative or pictorial
pieces to demonstrate their skills. Once they were married and their time was occupied with other
duties, embroidery was usually done as embellishment for the household if they had the time. This
exhibit will show a variety of samplers, pieces of redwork, and embroidered table scarfs, hand
towels, clothing, and decorative pieces.
Admission and parking are free. This exhibit will be included on all tours of the Pennypacker mansion
and is located on the second floor. In the adjacent Museum Shop, a variety of embroidery sampler kits
will be on sale that you can try yourself along with many other items that focus on the vintage style of
the early 1900s.

Pennypacker Mills is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm; Sunday, 1:00pm to
4:00pm; closed all Mondays and county holidays. Pennypacker Mills is open year-round for guided
tours, seasonal events, educational programs, and changing exhibits. The site is operated by the
Montgomery County Division of Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites and is located at 5 Haldeman Road,
